Our newsletter – July 2022

We have a real fondness for Lord Hill, namesake of our Lord Hill Gardens development on Abbey Foregate.  So to celebrate what would be his 250th birthday next month, we have a little give-away competition – read below to enter.

We have been exploring Abbey Foregate and discovering how the area has evolved over centuries with a rich mix of architecture.

Finally, meet SY Homes co-founder and Director, Rhys Thomas – always ready with a smile.

The evolution of Abbey Foregate

Abbey Foregate is one of Shrewsbury’s original grand avenues.

Less than a mile long, the local architecture is hugely diverse.  From the medieval Abbey built in 1083, past Victorian villas and residential blocks, to the modernist Shirehall at Column.

Travelling by foot, electric bus, or even rickshaw, on Abbey Foregate you can take a journey through Shrewsbury’s fascinating history of architectural evolution!

Surrounding the Abbey and close to the English Bridge across the Severn, Abbey Foregate is a designated ‘character area’.

Once a Saxon settlement, the area now has a thriving cafe scene, with excellent pubs and eateries, and a wide mix of shops including a superb, family-run hardware store established in 1964.

The Main Post Office on Abbey Foregate may look like it’s from bygone days – in fact it was serving the mail coach on Thomas Telford’s redesigned London-to-Holyhead route in 1842.

But a modern world exists inside this family-run business, with the latest supplies and online services.

At the other extremity of Abbey Foregate sits the late modernist architecture of Shirehall with its ovoid-shaped council chamber, built in 1966.

Like all buildings before and after, it was designed for ‘modern living’ and drew on new technologies of construction.  Choosing functionalism, minimalism and a rejection of ornament was a brave statement on this classical avenue.

When Lord Hill Gardens opens on Abbey Foregate, it will marry new with old.

Drawing on architectural themes and palettes from neighbouring properties, and discreetly set behind an elegant Georgian facade and garden, the new development of luxury homes will perfectly compliment this grand location.

At SY Homes we build with the intention to add real value to an area.  We appreciate and respect our local history, and believe in creative yet sympathetic architecture, whilst avoiding pastiche.  At Lord Hill Gardens we are breathing new life into an old site, and building for future generations to enjoy.
